Failing to plan is planning to fail

Posted by Will

My bedroom is an absolute mess. It’s overflowing with a mixture of vital bike equipment and useless paraphernalia, a mixture unlikely to be untangled before I go. In fact, I’m now sleeping in my brother’s bedroom for lack of space to sleep in mine. As a result, it’s almost certain I will leave something important behind. To-do lists are scattered all over the place, crumpled in my pockets and spinning, unwritten, around my head; most of them are not yet completed. Crucial equipment ordered frantically at the last minute has yet to arrive. And of course what I am trying to do is suddenly starting to sink in. Oh, the joys of starting a bike ride around the world!

aboutmebigHowever, I would say spirits are high, and so they should be. I can figure what I really need while I’m on the road, and it will probably turn out that most of stuff I’m packing now just sits in my panniers unused, its only function being to add extra weight to my already obese-looking bicycle. A lot of the to-do list items can be completed on the road and again might prove to be unnecessary. Equipment that doesn’t arrive on time can always be sent on to me while I am still in the UK. It is only realising the scale of the trip that makes me truly nervous, though that is what makes me truly excited. I can’t wait to be 2 weeks into the trip, in full swing, confident, with several hundred kilometres under my belt.

I plan to leave on the 5th or 6th March, a few days later than I had intended but when seen in the grand scheme of things is not really a very significant delay. Plus, the weather is supposed to be good on the 5th. The major tasks I have to complete by then are as follows:

• Finalize arrangements with the travel insurance company
• Make sure the new netbook is fully equipped with necessary files and software
• Ensure all the stuff I want to take actually fits on the back of the bike
• Talk properly with UNICEF
• Pay my library fine to the Oxford Union
• Cut my hair (I am open to suggestions/pleas for mercy regarding this point)

As this is my first post on the new website, I would like to welcome all visitors, whether you know me or not. I hope you enjoy what I have to say here (if you don’t, let me know, I’m sure we can work something out) and maybe even learn something useful. Comments, suggestions and witticisms are strongly encouraged and may well make my day. I look forward to hearing from you!
